Larry – thank you for bringing up ‘what do I believe?’ Interesting to me is the way that I have softened over the years. Earlier in my life I was very structured, caught in my beliefs, black and white, conservative and liberal. Now, after living in the crucible of life; now, understanding that my beliefs tend to bring to my life what I believe; now, that I seem to be happier with living resisting less and accepting more; now, that I am finding that acknowledging what is before me gives me the clearest options; that now, I offer my beliefs with less attachment and more understanding about personal preferences and the lives being lived. Carl Springer

I believe companies have a responsibility for the future of our planet and
our children

I believe brands must stand for something big, bold and beautiful

I believe politics is the essence of egotism

I believe nature must be protected and revered

I believe children are beautiful and deserve a real childhood

I believe our economy will not rebound unless we get Congress out of the way

I believe money can do good things if used wisely

I believe in being honest and joyful

I believe technology should become mastered rather than being the master

I believe aging is inevitable. Getting old is optional

I believe crises are opportunities

I believe that all companies have an underlying, pervasive air of desperation—which is good news for us consultants.

I believe that brands have distinctive voices.

I believe that politics is the process of resolving differences. As such, politics is a reflection of human nature, with some political stances shaped by values, some by ego, some by principle, some by greed... with various admixtures thereof. Politics is not bad or good... just fundamentally human.

I believe that our economy is over-freighted with government involvement.

I believe money is not "everywhere," as my son said when he was young. It actually tends to be quite scarce.

I believe in being entertaining. Without that, there is no effective communication. And without that, no value added.

I believe that technology has replaced the natural environment as the most important shaper of society.

Hi Larry, I heard you speak at the AARP conference in Vegas a couple years ago. I bought your book and enjoy revisiting it. I love spending New Year's eve in front of a fire with my journal, noticing where I have been and where I want to go in the coming year. I'm saving your quiz for this Saturday night.

I believe...that nature can teach us patience and living in the moment.
I believe...that children have within them abundant joy.
I believe...in being honorable with myself and others.
I believe...I am growing, learning, discovering and seeking my daily purpose with conviction and passion.
I believe...crises can be your wisest of teachers.
I believe...aging is relative and a matter of the heart and spirit within each of us.
I believe...technology has its place but could never replace a warm embrace.
I believe...money is a powerful thing that can hurt or heal, depending upon the intent.
I believe...politics should be left to the politicians , for which I am NOT.
I believe...brands are a visualization of how you represent yourself or company, to the world.
I believe...companies with purpose and passion can change, not only the people in them, but their communities and the entire planet for the greater good.

I believe...love is the strongest and most powerful thing in all of The Universe; for which, ALL that I am, and ALL that I believe, is founded upon.

Well said. Aging to me gives us the opportunity to evolve and express ourselves in unique and different ways every day. Aging is a gift to those that are fortunate and lucky. Or, as Yogi Berra says, “It ain’t over till it’s over.”

Larry, thanks for giving me something to think about. Aging - to me - is the factor that increasingly influences our conduct and beliefs with wisdom. Wisdom helps us make better decisions about any issue we face and aging provides us with the opportunity to act wisely.

Among other wonderful transformations, aging allows us to touch ourselves in places that we fear to go to during our younger days. Honesty with oneself is always the most important game we ‘fail to play’ while growing up, getting schooled and working “on the day shift” [to quote the wonderful poet and songwriter Bob Dylan] and aging eventually provides us the time and space to get there...if we so choose. Happy travels [or should I say ‘trails’] to all of us who dare to take the journey!

Your insights are always fascinating, Larry. Another way of putting this is:
It really does fill you with thanksgiving to realize God blesses us for expressing and using the very gifts He graced us with in the first place. A life of service is also a life of joy.

Beautifully expressed, Larry. Another side of this is that the sooner we can strip away the artifice and understand who we really are, the sooner we can act as our wise selves. Lucky indeed are those that know themselves when still young.

Nice thought. I keep coming back to a quote by the Roman philosopher Lucius Annaeus Seneca: “It takes the whole of life to learn how to live, and, what will perhaps make you wonder more, it takes the whole of life to learn how to die.”

To me he is talking about stripping things away, giving things up, and letting those things about us which are superficial to die until what we are left with is our unique essence. It is precisely because it is unique that it gives us our greatest opportunity to contribute something new, something unique to others.
