Identity Beacon

Illuminating Possibilities

What do you believe?

12. I can’t get the number out of my head. It must be the season…the 12 days of Christmas, the 12 months of the year, even being on the cusp of 2012.

We’re not just in the season of 12s; we’re also in the season of believing. In family, in friendship, in giving, in — yes, for some — even Santa Claus. So, I have chosen to offer up a little “belief” quiz.

Here you go: 12 items to challenge your belief system. (For example, I believe that technology (see below) isn’t the answer to our prayers most people think it is.)

I believe companies …

I believe brands …

I believe politics …

I believe nature …

I believe children …

I believe our economy …

I believe money …

I believe in being …

I believe technology …

I believe aging …

I believe crises …

I believe I am …

So, what do you think, or rather… believe?

I’m the author of two groundbreaking books on identity. The first is Identity Is Destiny: Leadership and the Roots of Value Creation. It’s for leaders – and those aspiring to lead – who want new and innovative insights into what accounts for success over the long term. The other book is The Identity Code: The 8 Essential Questions for Finding Your Purpose and Place in the World. This work is for individuals who want to live more fulfilling, meaningful, productive lives. Bottom line: I help companies and individuals realize that they’ll be much more successful being themselves than acting like somebody else. In short, I help my clients find their true identity. When you find it, you have no competition. NOBODY can beat you at being you – especially if you consistently reinterpret your identity in ways that keep you fresh and relevant to the world around you.

I believe…that nature can teach us patience and living in the moment.
I believe…that children have within them abundant joy.
I believe…in being honorable with myself and others.
I believe…I am growing, learning, discovering and seeking my daily purpose with conviction and passion.
I believe…crises can be your wisest of teachers.
I believe…aging is relative and a matter of the heart and spirit within each of us.
I believe…technology has its place but could never replace a warm embrace.
I believe…money is a powerful thing that can hurt or heal, depending upon the intent.
I believe…politics should be left to the politicians , for which I am NOT.
I believe…brands are a visualization of how you represent yourself or company, to the world.
I believe…companies with purpose and passion can change, not only the people in them, but their communities and the entire planet for the greater good.

I believe…love is the strongest and most powerful thing in all of The Universe; for which, ALL that I am, and ALL that I believe, is founded upon.

Hi Larry, I heard you speak at the AARP conference in Vegas a couple years ago. I bought your book and enjoy revisiting it. I love spending New Year’s eve in front of a fire with my journal, noticing where I have been and where I want to go in the coming year. I’m saving your quiz for this Saturday night.

  • Claude Singer says:

I believe that all companies have an underlying, pervasive air of desperation—which is good news for us consultants.

I believe that brands have distinctive voices.

I believe that politics is the process of resolving differences. As such, politics is a reflection of human nature, with some political stances shaped by values, some by ego, some by principle, some by greed… with various admixtures thereof. Politics is not bad or good… just fundamentally human.

I believe that our economy is over-freighted with government involvement.

I believe money is not “everywhere,” as my son said when he was young. It actually tends to be quite scarce.

I believe in being entertaining. Without that, there is no effective communication. And without that, no value added.

I believe that technology has replaced the natural environment as the most important shaper of society.

Larry – thank you for bringing up ‘what do I believe?’ Interesting to me is the way that I have softened over the years. Earlier in my life I was very structured, caught in my beliefs, black and white, conservative and liberal. Now, after living in the crucible of life; now, understanding that my beliefs tend to bring to my life what I believe; now, that I seem to be happier with living resisting less and accepting more; now, that I am finding that acknowledging what is before me gives me the clearest options; that now, I offer my beliefs with less attachment and more understanding about personal preferences and the lives being lived.
